Richard Joseph Schiltz
July 19, 1933 – July 5, 2025
Richard Joseph Schiltz, 91, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2025, surrounded by his children, just shy of his 92nd birthday. A lifelong resident of Dubuque, Richard was born there on July 19, 1933.
Richard served his country in the Air Force as a Radio Operator from 1951 to 1955.
Richard then built a long and successful career as a contractor, known for his craftsmanship, reliability, and integrity. Later in life, he transitioned into real estate, where he enjoyed helping others find their homes with the same care and attention he brought to building them.
Richard is survived by his seven children: John Schiltz (Jennifer), Mark Schiltz (Penny), Lori Cripe, Donald Schiltz (Kathy), Paul Schiltz (Annette Baker), Mike Schiltz (Terri), and Luke Schiltz (Maria Cigrand). He was the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren and great-grandfather of 20 great-grandchildren.
Richard was preceded in death by his sisters Mary C. Schiltz and Jeannie Huberty. He is survived by his sisters Martha Smith and Kitsy Heller (Paul), along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss his quiet strength and steady presence.
Richard will be remembered for his strong work ethic. Whether on a job site or on the family ranch. He loved a good day of getting dirty riding horses and roping calves.
Special thanks to the Hospice of Dubuque staff who provided compassionate care to Richard and his family. Also special recognition for the waitresses at Dotties who made him welcome in spite of his tipping strategy.
A private Celebration of Life to be scheduled in September.
