Former Dubuque Police Captain William J. “Bill” Von Ah 85 of Dubuque died Friday February 5, 2016 at home.
Funeral services will be at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at the Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where friends may call from 2:00 p.m. until time of the service. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Bill was born on May 23, 1930 in Dubuque the son of Albert and Hildegard (Thies) Von Ah. He married Dorothy Schmitt on Sept. 5, 1953 at Saint John the Baptist Church in Peosta, she preceded him in death on February 5, 2010. Bill served in the U.S. Navy and in 1958 joined the Dubuque Police Dept. He served in the police department for 28 years retiring in 1986 as Captain. Bill later worked at the Elm Street Correction Facility until 1995.
Bill was a member of the Boat Club and enjoyed bowling and golfing in his spare time. He was a member of many bowling leagues and in June of 1994 he accomplished what few golfers do, “a hole in one”. He was also good for a story or a joke, sometimes several times, and a good day always started with breakfast at Sunshine West, a little Black Jack, but mostly just getting out among the people.
He is survived by his children Connie (John) Patrick, of Liberty, MO, Tammy Von Ah, and Alan (Jackie) Von Ah, of Shawnee, KS, Bruce (Connie) Von Ah, of Dubuque, Lance (Diane) Von Ah, of Carmel, IN, and Tracy Doyle, of Asbury, IA. Twelve grandchildren Matthew McNeil, Christopher and Holly Von Ah, Cody and Courtney Frazier, Nicholas Von Ah, Lance Jr., Nicole, and Halle Von Ah, and Karissa, Makayla and Brock Doyle, and a sister Nancy Durni of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Dorothy, 3 brothers Donald, Albert “Hap” and Robert Von Ah, and a sister Dolores Weber.
A William “Bill” Von Ah memorial fund has been established.
