Joyce Irene Miller

Joyce Irene Miller, 74, of Dubuque, IA, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2016 at home, surrounded by family.

Funeral mass will be at 12:00 p.m. Friday, December 9th, 2016 at the Church of the Resurrection with Rev. Joseph Hauer Officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Asbury Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Friday, December 9th, 2016 at the Church with a rosary at 8:45 a.m. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road is assisting the family.

Joyce was born January 13, 1942, the 11th of 14 children to John and Bernadette (Brimeyer) Engling. She married Karl Gene Miller on October 3, 1959, he preceded her in death on August 25, 2005.

As a Navy spouse for 20 years she dutifully accompanied Karl on assignments from coast to coast.

She returned to Dubuque in 1977 and held various jobs in the community, most notably a catering service which she operated for 10 years, at which time chronic arthritis forced an early retirement and forced her to close the business.  She went on to attend NICC where she graduated with a clerical degree in 1987.  She worked as a bookkeeper and secretary at St. Joseph's the Worker Catholic Church until her retirement in 2000.

Even in retirement she remained active within the community attending church services and organizations including The Catholic Daughters for many years and The Fibromyalgia Foundation where she was a board member.  On 3 separate occasions she and her friend Deloris Cordell led a bus load of pilgrims to The Shrine Anne de Beaupre in Quebec City, Canada.  She also enjoyed and was an avid bowler for 25 years with her bowling partner Mary Jo McFadden.

She is survived by her children James Dean Miller; Karla Joy (Brad) McIntyre, their children Maxwell and Sabrina; Julie Kay Miller, her daughter Bayleigh; Wayne William Miller, his children Ariel, Dylan and Zackary all of Dubuque. Timothy Jay (Sylvanna) Miller, their children Jessica Miller and Richard (Averia) Miller, of Chesapeake, VA and Kathryn (Rob) Paquin of Providence, RI and Wendy Irene (Jared) Biedenbach, their daughter Evann Grace, of Holland, MI.  And her great-grandchildren Logan, Sophia, Owen and Moriah.  Also survived by 3 brothers Carl, Leon and Don and 3 sisters, Marcy Travis, Helen Molzof and Cindy Ohnesorge.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Karl, her parents, John and Bernadette, a great-grandchild James Timothy (JT) her brothers, Johnny, Alfred, David, Ray and sisters Theresa, Lou and Irene.
